This comes from The Wiltshire Regiment's badge and has its orgins in the Maltese Cross whose eight points symbolize the eight beatitudes of St. Mathew's Gospel.

THE CHINESE DRAGON
This was the badge of The Royal Berkshire Regiment which was adopted in recognition of the 49th Regiment's service in the Opium War.

COIL OF ROPE
This is a naval coil of rope to commemoratethat both Regiments fought as Marines during their early history.

THE RED BACKING
This is known as the Brandywine Flash and commorates an action fought by the 49th during the American War of Independence when they dyed their head-dress feathers red to show that they had been responsible for carrying out a daring night attack on the American position.
